Challenge
For users to know the importance of re-focussing, energize, and making the most out of life. We want to provide users the space to explore themselves and the world, creating a better environment for humans and the planet, ensuring we can all bloom together.
My impact
Research and planning:
Working with the Saku team to perform competitor analysis
Research into health and wellbeing products, what forms the critical basis of these products and helps them perform well
Understanding best practices from this industry
Interviewing stakeholders to better understand what the business required
Lead design on:
Several iterations of the functionality and brand across the native app
A new branding application and iterations to achieve the right aesthetic for Saku
A component library (design), built using Figma
Several rounds of design QA for the native app
Team & background
The COVID-19 pandemic hit the world early 2020, and by March the Coronavirus had spread to the majority of the world. Countries enforced a strict lockdown protocol, forcing people to stay indoors. Mental health became a serious issue as people felt unease, stress, and confusion during the pandemic lockdown.Over 900 people from around the world applied to take part in the CommonVC Coronavirus Hackathon (endorsed by the UK Environment Minister) to propose a solution for a “post-COVID” world. Out of the 400 people accepted, we found each other. We spent 3 months ideating on an app that people afflicted by the pandemic can use.Our team is spread over 3 continents, 6 time-zones and 7 Nationalities. We have different skills, experiences, and personalities, but we came together with the goal of creating a better quality of life for each other and the planet.
Wireframes and core journeys
We teamed together to roadmap the core journeys and functionality that the app would have for its first release. This included:
Onboarding
User profile
Activities journey
Settings
My Saku (Health and wellbeing)
I initially started by wireframing the onboarding journeys including Saku's onboarding questionnaire. This was derived from User research and interviews and to focus on the element of personalisation of the app to the individual user.
I found this helped user satisfaction tremendously. We had feedback stating that the questionnaire was not too long or short and users felt it easy and simple to go through.
Brand discovery
As we were a team of freelance designers, working in different time zones organising meetings had to be meticulous. I met regularly with the brand designer at Saku and had varying conversations about making the brand fit for purpose and ready to be used on digital platforms.I did this by:Collaborating with the brand designer on a regular basisSpeaking with developers to ensure we designed to suit the languageTesting new components to make sure they worked Ensuring the designs were WCAG compliantRegular updating and testing and documentation of the new design system (as I started from scratch)
Testing into development
After several rounds of testing with prototypes and a user panel - there were several core insights that we gained from users:
Intuitiveness - 70%+ thought the app was super intuitive and easy to use
Health and wellbeing insights (how users want to be keeping on top of their health) this featured in the 'my saku' journey
Gamification - 11/15 users loved the playful nature of the app and said that it would make them want to continue using the app
92% of users said they would use the app in daily life
We prioritised the data and applied the necessary changes via MoSCoW method. The rest was left for the next release. The updates were made, sent to development then I took the lead on QA for the launch. Below is a snippet from the prototype.
